Dr. Verghese is known for his acclaimed non-fiction work, including “My Own Country,” which was based on his experiences as a physician treating persons with HIV in Johnson City, Tennessee. It became a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award.
His second book, “The Tennis Partner,” was a New York Times notable book and a national bestseller. He has published extensively in medical literature and his work has appeared in The Atlantic.com, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The New Yorker.
Board-certified in internal medicine and in pulmonary and infectious diseases, Abraham Verghese earned his MFA at the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop. He is a tenured professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine where he is Senior Associate Chair for the Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine.
